Amazing rise of England players' barber from jail cell to community champion

England's Euro stars are having their barnets kept in top shape by a barber who has turned his life around.

Dominic Othol, 34, is now the Three Lions’ barber with a huge social media following and has put 36 youngsters through training.

Dominic – nicknamed Smokey – says he’s been stabbed six times and learned to cut hair while he was in prison 12 years ago.

Now an anti-knife crime campaigner, he’s been invited by the Football Association to look after the team’s locks at England’s HQ where he is a familiar face to A-list clients like Marcus Rashford, Jaden Sancho and Danny Welbeck.

He runs two barber shops in South West London and helps kids with community projects.

Dominic - also known as the masked barber – told the Sunday Mirror he hopes his story will inspire youngsters.

About his past, he said: “I don’t want to say anything because I don’t want to upset anyone. I just want to help others in the community."

On Friday, the barber posted on Instagram as he arrived at the England camp, alongside the words: “Can’t lie this is all mad, let’s take it back 12 years ago sitting in a cell.

"Now doing up England. Nah God you really said stick with me and I will show you my power. I hope this inspires the next generation that anything is possible.”

Dominic, who is a knife crime campaigner, has previously said of his newfound success: “It started with me going to jail to be honest.

“I was lucky to get a barbering job. I only took it to get out of my cell.”

He added: “I went down a bad path”. I’ve come from a background where I’ve had to be everything you can think of.

“I’ve been stabbed and nearly lost my life. I was stabbed six times – but I’m still here and still breathing.”

Fans who want a trim like England’s aces won’t need a footballer’s salary if they head to one of Dominic’s two shops.

Cuts start at £13, with cornrows for £25 and single plaits priced at £40.

Dominic began his career going to football training grounds of local clubs offering to cut hair and pass out flyers, before Reading manager Steve Clarke, who now manages Scotland, asked him to come every week and cut his players’ hair.

Other famous football clients have since included Jesse Lingard, Ronaldinho, and former African Ballon d’Or winner George Weah, who is now the president of Liberia.

But Dominic said: “I’m not just a baller’s barber. I do trim ballers but to me they are just human beings like everyone else. They need a certain kind of attention, but they aren’t different to any other human being.”

Speaking about Rashford, Dominic has said: “It’s only now that people are seeing what he is doing but I’ve known this from when I first met him. He’s different!

“Humble, grounded and you can see it’s not just about football.”

On Borussia Dortmund star Sancho, 21, he said: “I started trimming him when he was at Watford. He was so young then.”

Dominic added: “As you can see within the barbershop, we try to get the young kids off the roads and show them, earn that good money.

“If it’s not barbering and it’s football you like, and like myself you have parents who didn’t push you in the right way, we’ve built an academy and we take boys off estates.

“To this day we’ve put 36 of our own kids into academies.

“We’ve been doing this since we started. We give kids that chance, that extra push to kick on so they can go and reach their goals and achieve them.

“Knowing I didn’t get that support and I wish I did when I was younger, it makes me wanna give back.”

Another celeb barber Sheldon Edwards, originally from Jamaica and known as HD Cutz, is looking after a number of other England squad members, including Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling.
