Amazing pictures by young Mirror readers to be taken to deepest place in the world

These amazing pictures drawn by young Daily Mirror readers will be taken to the deepest place in the world next week.

They were chosen by explorer Richard Garriott who will become only the 14th person in history to go to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

He asked for pictures, questions, posters and poems from youngsters and was astounded by the quality of the entries.

They have already been sent to him on a ship in the Pacific Ocean where they will be printed off and taken down with him in a specially built British designed submersible next Tuesday.

Richard, 59, is also taking a copy of the Daily Mirror with him on his incredible journey to the bottom of the earth.

British-born Richard, an astronaut, flew to the International Space Station in 2009.

He said: “I'm overwhelmed by the pictures and questions from these young British schoolchildren.

“Some of them are amazing and I hope that they will always cherish the fact that pictures they drew are going down to the deepest part of the planet.”

One of the pics was drawn by seven-year-old Jocelyn Steel who attends Shakespeare Primary School in Fleetwood, Lancashire.

She told Richard: “I have made a picture of a spookfish. They are my favourite.

“I made my picture using things from our recycling bin and then added some detail on the computer.

“My spookfish is a bit sad because of all the plastic in the ocean.”

Richard teamed up with the Mirror to inspire youngsters to care about the environment and become the explorers of the future.

Competition organiser Heather MacRae CEO of the Ideas Foundation said: “We have genuinely been impressed with the stunning quality of Daily Mirror readers entries.

“We had hundreds of entries and have been delighted with the response.”
