Amazing photos of the Hydro being built as the iconic Glasgow venue celebrates seventh anniversary

Glasgow's SSE Hydro arena has become one of the top venues in the world in recent years - being named the second busiest concert venue on the planet in 2019 behind only Madison Square Garden.

The 13,000-seater arena was opened seven years ago this week - on September 30, 2013 - by singer Rod Stewart with the aim of attracting over one million visitors in its first year.

During a stellar 2014 the Hydro hosted the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup Gala Concert, the MTV EMA and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and welcomed 1.4 million visitors.

Global superstars such as Beyonce, Prince, The Eagles and Justin Timberlake also graced the stage while Still Game Live shows proved a massive success over 21 dates.

2015 was another blockbuster year with Kevin Bridges, U2, One Direction, Taylor Swift, Elton John and Take That all performing in the city.

However, the Hydro did survive one slight scare. Two months before the venue opened its doors for the first time, a welder's torch started a blaze in the building.

Fire crews raced to the Hydro on the banks of the Clyde as the blaze took hold.

Flames and huge plumes of black smoke could be seen shooting from the building as around 40 firefighters tackled the fire.

Although the essential structure seemed relatively unscathed, a section of guttering measuring at least 100m was clearly well alight as cinders and chunks of flaming debris fell to the ground.

Thankfully, the big spaceship survived - and it has become an integral part of the ongoing Clydeside regeneration, as well as the city skyline.

And while it remains shut due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, we cross our fingers that it won't be too long before we can head back there to take in a show and see it packed out with 13,000 punters.
