Amazing map video shows explosion in Edinburgh cycling since lockdown

An amazing animated map shows the routes taken by people riding Just Eat bikes in Edinburgh every day since the scheme started.

The map covers rides taken on the rental bikes since the scheme launched in September 2018 and shows a startling spike after lockdown started.

Just Eat announced record-breaking numbers of people taking to Edinburgh's streets during lockdown, as roads became quieter and cycling took off as a popular, distanced way to excercise.

The bikes have a GPS tracker which collects anonymous data about where each one goes, this publicly-available data was taken and mapped by data expert Benedek Rozemberczki.

Benedek, a PhD candidate at Edinburgh University working on machine learning and data mining, made the map to visualise how much the bikes were being used.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live Benedek said: "When I saw the finished video I was surprised at the increased use of the bicycles during lockdown."

Lockdown has seen a surge in cycling. In June, Just Eat said they had seen more than double the number of hires every month compared to last year.

A record-breaking 1600 trips were taken Wednesday May 22 with that record was quickly smashed on Saturday June 21 with 2,428 trips.

You can see more of Benedek's work on his GitHub page.
