Amazing images show humpback whale caught splashing around in the Firth of Forth

A humpback whale was spotted in the Firth of Forth this afternoon.

The amazing animal was captured as it enjoyed the Edinburgh waters for some time before submerging back below the surface.

Although once a very rare sight in Scottish waters, humpback wales are now seen more frequently in and around the coast.

According to researchers, the mammals now often migrate through the area, on their way to both feeding and breeding grounds.

Today (Sunday) the whale looked to be having a great time as it splashed about in the sea, showing off both its back and even its iconic tail.

Described by Scottish Environment LINK, the humpback whale can be easily spotted through either the bumps on their necks or the hump and the front of their dorsal fins.

With some of the largest fins in the animal kingdom, the whales are known to be good-natured, and can also blow up to four metres into the air.

Although the age of today's whale is unknown, the animals can grow up to 17 metres in length and live for an average of 50 years.
