Amazing footage shows thunder and lightning across Ireland overnight as forecasters predict more to come

Amazing footage taken overnight shows thunder and lightning crashing down on the Irish landscape - and Met Eireann predicts further storms are to come.

Videos recorded from homes across the country in the early hours of this morning showed the awesome streaks of lightning brightening up the skies.

Slow motion footage taken by Liam van der Spek from his home in Drumgola, Co Cavan, showed multiple bolts of lightening crash down from the sky while Kildare weather shared footage of thunder and lightening in Naas.

And more is to come with thunderstorms set to hit parts of the country today as humid weather continues across Ireland.

Although cloudy, Met Eireann is predicting temperatures to reach around the 25C mark with North Leinster and Ulster most likely to be hit by the thunder.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Outbreaks of rain will continue to spread northeast over Munster this afternoon, elsewhere, sunny spells with the risk of an Isolated heavy shower or thunderstorm in north Leinster and Ulster.

"Warm and humid in northeastern counties with highs of 20 to 24 degrees but turning much fresher further south and west with highs of 15 to 19 degrees in mostly moderate southerly winds.

"Showery rain will continue in most areas tonight with some heavy and possibly thundery bursts. Lowest overnight temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees. Some mist and fog patches will form in light variable breezes, increasing moderate to fresh westerly in the southwest by morning."

Saturday looks like a very wet day nationwide with prolonged showers.

The forecaster added: "Frequent showers tomorrow, merging into longer spells of rain at times, with some heavy bursts, especially in parts of Connacht and western Ulster.

"Winds mostly moderate to fresh westerlies but increasing strong at times along coasts. Highest temperatures between 13 and 16 degrees."
