Amazing day trips to take from Manchester before summer ends

You don't need to travel far in the north west to find an amazing day out, whatever your age.

Whether you're in to natural wonders, theme parks, shopping or the seaside, there's something to fit your brief.

Overseas holidays are for the most part off the agenda this year, and the surge in people taking UK holidays has led to an overwhelming demand for hotel and B&B stays.

Thankfully, none of the below require an overnight stay - you can easily get there and back from Greater Manchester in one day.

Make sure to check the latest guidance before travelling, including the rules, restrictions and opening hours at your chosen attraction or destination.

Remember that the current advice is still to avoid using public transport where possible, so the below are best visited by car.

Peak Cavern, Peak District National Park

The Village Screen Quarantine Cinema (Nathan Dainty - itsNate.uk)

The rolling hills, dramatic rocky outcrops, and endless greenery of the Peak District may be what the national park is best-known for.

But there are plenty of wonders to be discovered below the surface too.

The Peak District is home to a network of jaw-dropping cave systems, with four clustered close together around the village of Castleton.

Here you'll find the Blue John Cavern, the Speedwell Cavern, Peak Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern.

You can take boat trips, learn all about the history of this amazing corner of England, and visit the 'Devil's Arse'.

The best bit? It doesn't even matter if it's raining.

Jodrell Bank, Cheshire

Jodrell Bank (Anthony Holloway)

For fans of space and science, there aren't many UK destinations more worth visiting than Jodrell Bank.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jodrell Bank is home to the Lovell Telescope - once the world's largest steerable radio telescope and still the third-largest globally.

Across its 35 acre site, visitors will be able to learn more about this world-leading science research institute, including talks, demonstrations and activities.

Jodrell Bank re-opened booking earlier this month to welcome back guests from August 22.

Llangollen, Wales

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (North Wales Daily Post)

Adrenaline junkies will have a lot of energy to burn off after being cooped up inside for so many months, and there aren't many places better to get your thrills than Llangollen.

This small town in Denbighshire is home to all sorts of activiities, including white water rafting, cycling, paddleboarding and hiking the beautiful Offa's Dyke path.

There are heritage sites such as Plas Newydd to visit, plus steam train rides and even kayak tours over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Brockhole on Windermere, Lake District

Brockhole (SCU)

Perched on the shore of Windermere, Brockhole is packed with things to do for people of all ages and is set in one of the nation's prettiest locations.

You can learn more about the Lake District National Park, or just cram in as many activities - including treetop treks, orienteering, archery, mini golf, laser clay shooting and boating - as possible.

The striking white structure that is Brockhole House is home to a gift shop, exhibitions, a gallery, and a café and restaurant (both of which are taking part in August's Eat Out to Help Out scheme).

Every penny spent at Brockhole goes straight back into protecting and preserving the national park. Money well spent.

Zip World, north Wales

Zip World (Handout)

There are three different Zip World centres in north Wales - Penrhyn Quarry, Slate Caverns, and Fforest - each with its own set of activities.

Perhaps the most famous is the Velocity 2 at Penrhyn Quarry, the world's fastest zip wire which sees brave souls zooming headfirst above the quarry.

For something only slightly calmer, there are smaller zip wires to whizz along at Fforest's treetop zip safari, along with the kilometer-long Fforest Coaster.

Head to Slate Caverns and you'll find Bounce Below, an amazing network of nets suspended through an underground disused mine.

Liverpool's museums

Museum of Liverpool (Colin Lane/Liverpool Echo)

Manchester's got some truly world-class museums within its borders, but if you've visited them all you could always head down the M62 to make a start on Liverpool's too.

Our neighbours in Merseyside have their own branch of the Tate, as well as the amazing Merseyside Maritime Museum that delves into the history of the Titanic.

There's also the Beatles Story, the Walker Art Gallery, and the impressive waterfront Museum of Liverpool.

Once you're done, there's no end of food and drink to check out before you head back home again.

Shopping in Hebden Bridge

Hebden Bridge (Huddersfield Daily Examiner)

Less than an hour's drive from parts of Greater Manchester, Hebden Bridge is a charming little market town in West Yorkshire.

The area is famed for its range of independent shops, cinching a Great British High Street Award back in 2016 - you'll find everything from records to jewellery to antiques to clothing to cakes.

Follow the town centre trail which will show you all of the town's historical highlights, with plenty of opportunities to stop for a browse or a coffee on the way round.

It's also surrounded by beautiful countryside, including the National Trust's Hardcastle Crags, if you prefer to get your steps in in the great outdoors.

SC2, Ryhl

Rhyl's SC2 waterpark (Daily Post Wales)

The amazing indoor water park at SC2 in Rhyl will finally reopen its doors later this month, with bookings open from August 17.

Inside is the fastest flume in the world - the Anaconda - which whisks swimmers along in pitch darkness before spitting them out of a giant snake's mouth at the other end.

There's also the three-lane Speedster, and the gravity-defying Boomerang.

Littler visitors can splash around in the Piranha Play zone, with a water confidence zone and smaller slides.

The Ice Cream Farm, Cheshire

The Ice Cream Farm (PUBLICITY PIC)

There's more to the Ice Cream Farm than just frozen desserts - though there are a lot of those too.

The Ice Cream Farm is packed with family-friendly attractions to tire kids out before you hit the ice cream parlour.

There's the Strawberry Falls adventure golf, the Silvercone quad bike race track, and plenty to explore at Daisy's Garden.
