'Amazing' Aldi worker gets elderly woman, 87, hot meals after seeing her buy tinned food in lockdown

An Aldi worker has been heaped with praise after he arranged hot meals for an elderly customer he spotted regularly buying herself tinned food.

Richard Allen made the heartwarming gesture at the supermarket’s branch in Camborne, Cornwall, to ensure the 87-year-old woman got fresh food.

The woman told him she had no microwave or oven at home, and had no family nearby to help her.

It prompted Mr Allen to contact local cafe Miss Molly’s Tea Room, which has been feeding vulnerable people in the community during lockdown for £5 each time.

Leander Connaughton, who works at the cafe, shared the touching story on the town’s coronavirus community Facebook group.

In a post shared hundreds of times, she wrote: "Hello lovely group, I just thought I'd share a lovely story of people going above and beyond at this rather grim time.

“Aldi in Camborne have the most amazing staff, they noticed a very elderly customer was only buying tinned food from the beginning of lockdown.

“The manager asked if she'd like some fresh stuff but she said no as she has no oven or microwave. He then found out she doesn't have any family at all locally, So bless him, he rang our cafe and arranged to have hot meals delivered to her.

“He has also fixed her doorbell and offered to settle her bill if necessary (it's not) so this is a shout out to Richard, manager at Aldi Camborne who noticed a customer in need two weeks ago and stepped up to help out. You sir, are bloody amazing.”

Locals flocked to thank the “truly amazing” Aldi worker. One replied: “What a star you are Richard, but we knew that already!”

Another wrote: “What an amazing man you are. Such a lovely thing to do x”.

One added, “This has brightened my day,” while another said: “Well done Rich. The world needs more people like you."
