Amateur League football club raises over £700 for cancer charity

Finaghy Football Club has kicked off its annual fundraising drive by presenting a cheque for over £700 to a local cancer charity.

Each year the club choses an organisation to support through various fundraising initiatives.

And for the third year running the Amateur League outfit has pledged its support to Finaghy Cancer Group.

"Last season our club dealt with cancer first hand when two of our management team fought cancer and came out the other end," said Finaghy FC chairperson Karen Best.

"Sadly, a number of families connected to the club were also hit with cancer but weren't as fortune to survive."

The football club recently held a ballot and raised £730 for Finaghy Cancer Group.

"Finaghy Northern Ireland Supporters Club kindly donated to us a signed Northern Ireland shirt, and a former player Peter Stewart who owns Ormonde Art & Framing Gallery in Finaghy kindly framed the shirt," Karen said.

"We decided to sell ballot tickets and by doing this we raised £730. On Saturday we handed over a cheque to Eunice Bowes, a volunteer with the group who has connections with our club."

Karen added: Finaghy Cancer Group is a small local community-based organisation that raises and distributes incredible sums of money to various cancer charities

"They started their new fundraising campaign in May this year.  Last year they distributed £7000, and to date this year they have raised £3080

"We as a club are happy to support this wonderful charity."
