Amanda Staveley texting Alan Shearer over surprise return to Newcastle

Newcastle United part-owner Amanda Staveley has revealed she has been texting club legend Alan Shearer and will "sit down" with him over a return to St James' Park.

It follows the completion of the club's Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, making them one of the richest teams in the world.

Staveley, chief executive of PCP Capital Partners, who are part of the new regime led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), oversaw the end of Mike Ashley 's 14-year reign as Magpies owner on Thursday.

Supporters gathered in jubilation outside St James' Park to celebrate the takeover being approved by the Premier League, having received "legally binding assurances" that the Saudi state would not be in control.

And fans may have another reason to cheer as Staveley is aiming to bring Shearer - as well as fellow Toon icon Kevin Keegan - back to Newcastle for roles at the club as she discussed the idea of sporting directors and a Director of Football.

"I've texted with Alan a lot, and Kevin." the 48-year-old told local outlet The Chronicle. "They're heroes. I'm so excited to be able to sit down with Alan - I hope he gets involved because it's his club and it's so important.

"We don't want to dash in, though. It has to be the right thing that he's doing."

Shearer infamously stepped in as manager in 2009 for the final eight games of the season which saw his beloved side relegated to the second tier.

Upon Thursday's announcement following months of legal wrangling with the Premier League, the former striker tweeted : "Yesssssssss. We can dare to hope again."

The takeover has caused controversy due to the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, being listed as chair of PIF.

Staveley, who fronted the consortium, assured the Toon Army that their new owners are making a "long-term investment" on Tyneside, with the aim of "regularly competing for major trophies."

But that may not be under current boss Steve Bruce, who will reach his 1,000th game in management, with his boyhood north-east club, if he is kept in charge for Tottenham Hotspur's visit on Sunday, October 17.

The ex-Manchester United defender says he is "realistic" about his future and has no plans to speak with Staveley at present.

Does Bruce deserve a chance under the new owners? Comment your thoughts below.

"I'm happy for the club that this has gone through. It's a great night for the fans, I'm delighted for them," Bruce told Sky Sports News.

"I want to continue [as manager] but I have to be realistic. I'm not stupid and aware what could happen with new owners.

"I don't have any plans to speak to Amanda that I'm aware of."

Newcastle last lifted major silverware in 1955, beating Manchester City 3-1 in the FA Cup final, but the club unspectacularly yo-yoed between the Premier League and Championship under Ashley, a far cry from their illustrious history.

Now the Magpies beat the Citizens' owners on the Premier League rich list, with PIF boasting assets of £250billion.

Wild transfer speculation has ensued, with Kylian Mbappe somewhat playfully linked.

However, Staveley has noted that the new regime will have to play by the rules.

"We're really excited about strengthening the squad, but we have to work within Financial Fair Play and make sure this is done over a longer term," she explained.

"But you can know and be reassured that we want to invest at every level. We want to get the best squad we possibly can.

"Everybody talks about it [big-name players], but what you need is a team that works well together. That's also just as important."
