THE ex-boyfriend of Amanda Knox has responded to her Edinburgh Fringe show which is based on the murder they were both wrongfully convicted of.
Raffaele Sollecito and Knox were both convicted in 2009 of the murder and sexual assault of British foreign exchange student Meredith Kercher, in the Italian city of Perugia in 2007.
The couple maintained their innocence and, after years of legal battles, were acquitted of sexual assault and murder by Italy’s highest court in 2015.
Knox has taken her show, Cartwheel, to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the title in reference to a story which claimed she did cartwheels in a police station following the death of her friend.
A petition was launched in response to the show by a friend of the Kercher family. It has since received more than 38,000 signatures.
Elsewhere, Meredith's sister, Stephanie Kercher, said the show "normalises and trivialises violence against women".
Yet Knox defended the show, saying it is "about how the world is unsafe and unfair towards women and what it means to raise a daughter in that world, knowing how bad it can be".
Now her ex-boyfriend Sollecito has weighed in, telling the Sunday Mail: “I haven’t seen it, so I cannot pass judgement on its content. However, based on how it has been presented and promoted, I find it puzzling that a tragedy is being used as a draw for a comedy show.
“Personally, it is not an approach I agree with. I am trying to process and move past what happened in a different way.
“I don’t believe there is a right or wrong recipe for dealing with trauma; everyone finds their own path.”
Knox's show opened on Friday, with audience members saying it is "profoundly respectful" and "powerful".
