Amanda Knox compares US election to her time in Italy in poor taste joke

Amanda Knox has raised eyebrows with a risqué joke which compared her time in prison to the next four years of American politics.

With the contest between Donald Trump and Joe Biden too close to call this morning, tension remains incredibly high among political observers in the US.

In an apparent bid to ease the pressure, Ms Knox tweeted in the early hours: "Whatever happens, the next four years can't be as bad as that four-year study abroad I did in Italy, right?"

The 33-year-old was referencing the four years she spent in an Italian prison for the murder of fellow exchange student Meredith Kercher.

In 2015 she and Raffaele Sollecito were acquitted of killing her roommate and freed to return back to the US.

The light hearted comment was not particularly well received by those on social media.

One Twitter user wrote: "Agreed, the mass persecution of blacks, Muslims, Latinx, & LGBTQ pales in comparison to the tribulations of a single white woman."

Another added: "I'm sure the family of the murdered girl appreciate you finding the funny side...."

A third wrote: "Translate Tweet : 'The country descending into fascism can't be half as bad as me paying the consequences for my own actions, and then ultimately getting off!

"'Also, if you ever needed further proof that I'm a narcissistic sociopath, here it is'."

Since returning to the US, where she works as a journalist and podcast host, Ms Knox has not been afraid of wading into controversial topics.

Following the airing of the controversial documentary Tiger King, she aruged that the vilification of Carole Baskin was "unjustified".

The Big Cat Rescue owner has been accused of murdering her husband Don Lewis, who disappeared and is the subject of a missing person investigation.

Knox has slammed those who have given a "hateful response" to Baskin and said there is "insufficient evidence" for the theory that she bumped off her millionaire hubby.

With so much negativity towards Baskin, Knox has warned that the documentary wasn't "an objective and comprehensive overview of the facts."

She went on to say that it was a "sensational story whose north star for every important storytelling decision is entertainment."

Knox accused the Tiger King directors of "misleading" those in the documentary but did say that the story evolved from where they started five years ago.
