Amanda Holden launches petition for Captain Sir Tom Moore statue outside Parliament

Amanda Holden has launched a petition for a permanent tribute to Captain Sir Tom.

The 100-year-old war veteran, who raised £39million for the NHS charities last year, died on Tuesday after battling pneumonia and testing positive for coronavirus.

The Britain's Got Talent judge and Heart Breakfast host is among the stars to have paid tribute to the lockdown hero and is now calling for a statue to be erected outside Parliament.

Writing on the Change.org website, she described Sir Tom as "a national hero who brought us all together and shone so much light in such a dark time".

Amanda, 49, continued: "Let's show generations to come what it was to be brave, courageous and spirited with a statue of Captain Sir Tom Moore outside the Houses of Parliament forever more.

"Join me and Heart Breakfast to sign this petition to get things moving."

At the time of writing, more than 700 people had put their name to the petition, which is addressed to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

It is the latest call for a permanent tribute to Captain Sir Tom after the Downing Street flag was raised at half-mast on Tuesday and iconic landmarks were lit up in his honour.

NHS Charities Together, the umbrella organisation that brings together all the official charities of the NHS, said in its tribute on Tuesday that "when the time is right, we will put together a suitable tribute to Captain Sir Tom, in honour of everything he did for NHS charities."

The remarkable fundraiser captured the hearts of the nation when he walked 100 laps of his garden to raise money for the NHS - only setting a target of £1,000.

That was quickly smashed and he raised around £39m by the time the page was closed.
