Amanda Holden lands Eurovision role for this year's contest with huge responsibility

Amanda Holden has been given a very important job to do by the BBC for this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

After last year's event was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic., it has been confirmed that the 2021 contest will take place in Rotterdam next month.

The semi-finals for this year will take place on May 18 and 20, with the grand final set to be watched by a huge global audience on Saturday, May 22.

And it is then that Amanda will be given the responsibility of delivering the UK votes to the rest of Europe.

Her role was confirmed by the BBC this week as they revealed their Eurovision line-up for this year, which will see Graham Norton commentate once again for the final, with a trio of Scott Mills, Rylan Clark-Neal and Chelcee Grimes hosting the semis on BBC4.

Amanda follows in the illustrious footsteps of Nigella Lawson, Mel Giedroyc, Richard Osman, Alex Jones, Cheryl Baker and Lorraine Kelly as the UK voting spokesperson.

She commented: "What an honour to announce the UK’s votes this year. I’m utterly thrilled. It’s an ambition ticked after 45 years of watching it! Now, what to wear…"

Amanda's Eurovision job comes hot on the heels of her appearing on the first episode of new BBC show I Can See Your Voice and, reacting to the news, one viewer ranted: "Now even my annual enjoyment of #Eurovision is being spoiled by the BBC's current 'riddled with Amanda Holden' campaign?! Gah!"

Another reacted: "The BBC is certainly obsessed with Amanda Holden at the moment. Did the channel controllers binge a load of Britain's Got Talent during lockdown or something?"

The United Kingdom will be represented at Eurovision 2021 by singer/songwriter and former University of Newcastle student James Newman, who will be hoping to avoid the bottom of the leaderboard and the dreaded 'nil points' which his song Embers.

At the time of writing, the bookies' favourite to triumph this year were Malta, with France, Italy and Switzerland also well fancied to do well.
