Subsequently, the Britain's Got Talent head judge missed the semi-final stages and grand final of the ITV show.

Giving an update on his condition after Simon was seen in a video on social media for the first time in weeks, Amanda Holden told Tuesday's Good Morning Britain : "Lauren (Silverman) is always saying to me that, 'His will to get better is extraordinary.'

"He's very determined. He's a fighter… There's no way he will want to be seen to be failing or to not be getting better as quickly as he possibly can.

"So, I know that we will see him next year."

Amanda stepped in for Simon as head judge on BGT while Diversity Ashley Banjo joined the panel as the fourth judge.

Simon appeared on the Instagram Stories of close pal and ex Terri Seymour overnight as they marked his 61st birthday.

In a video filmed by Terri, her daughter Coco and Simon's son Eric, both five, are excitedly singing Happy Birthday as they await tucking into a birthday cake.
