Amad to Birmingham 'collapse' might prove blessing in disguise for Manchester United

If there is a voice on the telephone asking to loan a promising Academy player from Manchester United, then you would bet fairly it has come from down the M6.

Birmingham was the destination for Tahith Chong to continue his development earlier in the season and - upon his injury comeback - the Dutch prospect should head back to St Andrew's.

As and when he does so, there will be familiar and friendly faces in the dressing room.

That's not only in reference to Lee Bowyer, either. Tough and tenacious as a player - with Leeds United and others - the Birmingham manager has welcomed the United contingent with open arms this season.

You would find it difficult to type his name in any popular search engine and miss out *that* infamous on-field fight with his own teammate, Kieron Dyer, from their days together at Newcastle. However, the softly-spoken Londoner (usually) cuts a slightly different demeanour in the dugout.

"Everyone can have a luxury player, but he [Chong] brings so much more than that.

"He's a young lad and still learning the game, but his attitude has been spot on. He's been a credit to Manchester United since day one he came in for us and we love him."

Birmingham and Bowyer have treated Chong as any burgeoning talent should be.

That was highlighted when United agreed to send Teden Mengi to the same Championship destination earlier this month and now, after interest from Europe last summer, the same opportunity appeared to have been mapped out for €21.3million prospect Amad.

Only that proposed switch is, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, on the verge of collapse. It might have come with its pros and cons, in any case.

A player for tipped for the top at Old Trafford and beyond, the Ivorian teenager has already made his mark for the first-team, scoring against AC Milan in the Europa League last campaign and making nine appearances all-told after his January 2021 arrival from Italian side Atalanta.

Capped four times by the Ivory Coast, that progress has momentarily stuttered.

Amad had the opportunity to sign for Feyenoord on loan during the summer.

Put simply, that move failed to materialise and while the Rotterdam-based outfit are locked in a tense three-horse race for the Eredivisie title, the fleet-footed winger seemed to be gearing up for a slog in England's second division instead.

That comes as no disrespect to Birmingham, the Championship or wherever the player eventually rocks up.

Birmingham are a big club with Premier League status fresh in the memory. As indicated above, too, they will have taken care of Amad; granting him plenty of game-time in comfortable surroundings with Mengi - and quite possibly Chong - acting as teammates.

You sense Feyenoord might have been an opportunity missed, while the collapse of his move to Birmingham may, also, be considered as a blessing in disguise.

Hindsight, as they say, is a wonderful thing. Watching even Jesse Lingard struggle for game-time has acted as clear indication there. Feyenoord have come and gone, so have Birmingham. It might have been all-too familiar for Amad there in any case.

The whole point of loan deals is to challenge young players and remove them from their comfort zone. Bowyer has excelled for Chong and will no doubt excel for Mengi. Amad, though, must embrace his own path despite that developing relationship between the clubs.
