Amad reacts to Manchester United squad number change

Manchester United forward Amad has revealed he is delighted to have been handed the No.16 shirt at the club.

Amad arrived at Old Trafford in January from Serie A side Atalanta, with United forking out an initial £19million to recruit the highly-rated winger.

The 19-year-old was handed the No.19 shirt during his first half-season in Manchester, in which he made seven appearances and scored his first goal with a clever header against AC Milan in the Europa League.

However, Amad has swapped numbers this season to the No.16, with his old shirt being handed to new signing Raphael Varane.

United captured the vastly experienced centre-back in a £34million coup from Real Madrid this summer and upon his arrival he wanted the No.4 shirt, which he has worn with great success for the France national team.

However, the number is currently occupied by fellow defender Phil Jones and thus Varane opted for the No.19, which he previously wore in his debut season at Madrid.

That meant Amad had to change numbers, though, and he was assigned the No.16 which has been made famous at United by legends Roy Keane and Michael Carrick.

Amad has vowed to live to up to the legacy of those who wore the shirt before him.

“When I was told that I was getting the number 16 shirt, I was happy because I know that Michael Carrick had previously worn that shirt for a long time and so it is a number worn by a legend of the club,” he told United's in-house media.

“So I have to respect the number and the players who wore it before me.”

With just five days until the transfer window closes on August 31, Amad is still expected to go out on loan this season to gain some valuable first-team experience.
