Am I registered to vote? How to check you're registered to vote in the local elections

Local elections will take place in England, Scotland and Wales tomorrow.

Depending on where you live, you may be asked to vote for your local councillors, a police and crime commissioner, and/or your city's mayor.

Elections are also being held for the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments, and there is a by-election in Hartlepool.

Polls will be open from 7am until 10pm for registered voters to cast their ballots.

If you're not sure whether you're registered, here's how you can double check before heading to the polling station tomorrow:

How to check if you're registered to vote

You only need to register to vote once at each address, so if you voted in the 2019 general election - or at any other election in the past - and you haven't moved since, you will still be registered.

If you have received a polling card at your address, this means you are registered to vote.

If you're still not sure whether you're registered, you need to contact your local Electoral Registration Office.

You can do this by entering your postcode on the government's website.

Can I still vote if I forgot to register?

Unfortunately, anybody who is not already registered to vote cannot vote in the 2021 local elections tomorrow.

If you're not planning to move house in the near future, you should still register to vote. You can do it at any time, you only need to do it once, and this will ensure you don't miss out the next time there's an election in your area.

When you register to vote, your name and address will be added to the electoral register. This will ensure you can cast a ballot in all elections.

The electoral register is also used to investigate fraud, call people for jury service, and check credit applications.

There is a public version of the electoral register called the open register. This is available for anybody to buy, and is normally used by companies for marketing.

You can opt out of the open register, so your name and address will not be publicly available - but you will still be able to vote.
