Alzheimer’s UK: Fermanagh grandson leading community walk after watching both grannies suffer from disease

A Fermanagh grandson has organised a walk to raise money to help others after watching both his grandmas suffer with Alzheimer's disease.

Ryan Bogue, 32, lost one of his grandmothers several years back, following her battle with the progressive disease which affects brain function.

His other grandma also has the disease and is now in care.

The 32-year-old has therefore organised a walk close to his village Tempo in order to help others who have been affected by the disease.

Ryan said: “My grannies have both been affected by it, so it’s something that’s a wee bit close to my heart.

“Both of them have experienced it and their families have experienced it, so it’s just a small thing to do to try and raise a few pounds to make any sort of a difference.

"Covid doesn't make it any easier."

Under current Covid restrictions in Northern Ireland, care home residents are allowed two visitors for a maximum of one hour at a time, for a maximum of three visits each week.

This is due to be reviewed in mid October, when this could increase to a maximum of four visitors at a time from no more than two households, for a maximum of four visits per week.

But for now, Ryan's 95-year-old grandma is only allowed two visitors - Ryan's father and aunt.

"It makes all these things harder, doesn't it?" Ryan said.

While Ryan is unable to visit his granny, he is determined to "help in a small way" which is where his idea for the walk came from.

He said: "It's not going to be a big walk - maybe three or four miles, so anybody can take part. People can bring their dogs, their children in prams.

"It's not like it's a massive challenge. More of a get-together.

"The more money I raise the better - it's all going to a good cause."

Ryan has already raised over £350 for Alzheimer's UK, and his target is currently £500.
