Always Sunny star Rob McElhenney apologises for butchering the pronunciation of 'Blyth'

It's been a big week for Blyth Spartans as the team has been under the spotlight across the pond due to their FA Cup ties with Wrexham.

Wrexham are co-owned by Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Rob McElhenney, who've made a behind-the-scenes documentary following the club they have embraced since buying the Welsh side who are fighting to get back into the Football League.

Such is the pulling power of the pair, Wrexham's clashes with fellow non-league club Blyth Spartans were broadcast over the Atlantic on ESPN, which Reynolds and McElhenney encouraged followers to tune into in a pre-match video ahead of Tuesday's replay, which Wrexham won 3-2.

The duo are learning every day about football in Britain, as good sport McElhenney showed after he butchered the pronunciation of 'Blyth' in the promo video.

"Today you can watch Wrexham play 'the Bl-ith Spartans' on ESPN 2," said McElhenney, who created and stars in the smash hit Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

After learning of his error, McElhenney wrote a lighthearted tweet apologising to Blyth Spartans.

Rob posted: "Apologies to @Blyth_Spartans. It’s 'Bl-eye-th'! A big part of this endeavor has been learning new pronunciation. Did you know it’s “R-eye-an” Reynolds?? I’ve been pronouncing it 'Clementine Jehoshaphat' for years."

As followers pointed out to McElhenney, Blyth's corner of Northumberland is no stranger to difficult-to-pronounce names to those who are not of the parish.

One joked: "Rob, people from Blyth pronounce the names Cowpen 'Coop-en' and Cambois 'Camm-iss' they have no right to correct anybody."

Another added: "Gawd that’s an easy one!!! Near Blyth is a place called Cambois… took me years teaching in the area before I learned its correct pronunciation was Cam-miss."
