Mr Ong was originally from Petaling Jaya in Malaysia and was a former sergeant in the 12th Kula Lumpur Boys' Brigade before leaving in 2017 to begin his studies in Swansea.

The student's family are travelling to Wales to formally identify his body.

A good friend who studied with Mr Ong said: "He was an angel, not human and now he is in heaven. All his friends are shocked and can't believe that he is not here."

A former colleague of Mr Ong, Karyn Goh said: "We were working colleagues for a few months in 2017 and he was liked by all.

"He was a well mannered young friend to work with. The kids loved him so much as well. He was always smiling and very helpful."

Around 10,000 people were expected to participate in the 13.1 mile race.

A Swansea University spokesperson said: "We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Wilsern’s death.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this time and we extend our deepest condolences to them.

“The University’s Student Services are offering support to students and staff and encourage anyone who has been affected to contact 01792 606557."

The incident occurred after two other runners died in the Cardiff Half Marathon in October.
