'Always an excuse' - Nottingham Forest old boy reveals what playing for Neil Warnock was really like

Former Nottingham Forest loanee Lee Tomlin has criticised ex-Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock.

The 30-year-old spent the second half of the 2017-18 season on loan at the City Ground from the Bluebirds, making, scoring four goals in 15 appearances for the Reds.

Tomlin returned to Cardiff in the summer of 2018 with the club recently promoted to the Premier League, but the attacking midfielder was not part of Warnock’s plans and did not make a single appearance in the top flight.

He was loaned out to League One outfit Peterborough United in January, where he scored twice in 21 appearances for Posh.

Tomlin is now back in south Wales, and has been a more regular figure in the Cardiff side in the Championship, making seven appearances prior to Warnock’s departure in November.

"For me, deep down you knew you weren’t getting picked," Tomlin told Wales Online of his time under Warnock.

"There was always an excuse against me. That’s fine, everyone has got their own opinions.

"It’s not for me to argue with people, I feel like people listen to the reasons why. Not fit, not this, not that.

"If that’s what people want to believe because that’s what the gaffer said then that’s fine. I know myself, you can’t get unfitter by losing two stone. That’s a fact.

"I’ve worked so hard and now it’s unbelievable."

Since Neil Harris’ arrival last month, Tomlin has played in all thee of Cardiff’s Championship fixtures and set up Nathaniel Mendez-Laing for the winning goal against Forest at the weekend.

"Waking up in the morning and smiling makes you want to do well, not just for yourself but for everyone at the club", Tomlin added.

"It’s just much better."
