Alun Wyn Jones, Ross Moriarty and Taulupe Faletau all ruled out of entire autumn series in bombshell announcement

Wales have been dealt a massive blow with news that captain Alun Wyn Jones requires an operation following the injury he sustained against New Zealand on Saturday.

And in a further blow to coach Wayne Pivac, Taulupe Faletau has also been released from camp due to his ongoing ankle injury.

Ross Moriarty, who also left the field against the All Blacks through injury, is, like Jones, set to go under the knife.

Both Moriarty and skipper Jones are set to be sidelined for a "number of months".

Pivac has called up Ospreys' Rhys Davies and Cardiff's Shane Lewis-Hughes, with Arms Park team-mate Willis Halaholo set to rejoin the squad at the end of the week after recovering from coronavirus.

It's a bombshell announcement for Wales and Pivac.

Jones suffered the injury in the 19th minute of the match at the Principality Stadium as he tackled Kiwi Jordie Barrett.

It is the same shoulder he injured during the Lions v Japan game just over four months ago. On that occasion, he ended up missing the majority of the tour, but returned for the Test series against the Springboks four weeks later.

Moriarty, meanwhile, was forced off the field just 20 minutes after Jones, also suffering a shoulder injury.

He was carrying into contact when a collision with Ethan Blackadder and Nepo Laulala did for his right shoulder.

Wales, however, have been bolstered by a return to contention for Liam Williams, Ellis Jenkins and Dan Biggar.

Williams and Jenkins missed Saturday's defeat to New Zealand with injury, while Biggar was unavailable, though he left Northampton's defeat to Leicester early.

All three have been training this week and are in contention for Saturday's match.

“Yeah, well, Biggs is Biggs,” said Wales kicking coach Neil Jenkins.

“He’d be in contention no matter where he was in the world. He’s a fantastic player and he’s a big part of our squad.

“I have no doubt that he should be there or thereabouts on Saturday.

“Liam is training. He trained yesterday and today, and he’s been doing other aspects of training in the last few weeks.

“He’s building up nicely. He trained really well this morning.

“He’s fit and available as far as I’m concerned, yeah.”

On Cardiff flanker Jenkins, he added: “It just came a little bit too soon, the game [against New Zealand], as in being able to train fully.

“Later on last week he trained fully and he’s trained fully over the last few days.

“Ellis is another one who is in contention to play on Saturday.”
