Alun Wyn Jones out of Lions tour as Warren Gatland forced to replace him after crushing news

Tour captain Alun Wyn Jones is out of the Lions trip to South Africa with a dislocated shoulder.

The Wales skipper suffered the injury in the seventh minute of today’s match against Japan at Murrayfield.

You feared the worst from the look on his face as he left the field with his left arm being supported by a medic and head coach Warren Gatland confirmed the news after the game.

“His shoulder was dislocated,” he said.

“They got it back in pretty easily.

“The best case scenario is he might be right for the first Test.

“However, we’ve had a chat and it looks like we’re going to have to replace him. It’s devastating news. It’s very disappointing for him. It’s one of those things you’ve got to put behind you and move on as quickly as you can.

“We’ll look at getting someone in pretty quickly and on the plane tomorrow.”

Gatland confirmed that Jones would not be flying out to South Africa and will be heading home to Wales.

As for Justin Tipuric, who also came off in the first half, Gatland said: “He got a sting in the shoulder. We’re going to check on the scan that there’s no nerve damage. We’re pretty confident that he’s going to be ok.”
