Alun Wyn Jones' Lions speech left players and fans in awe

Alun Wyn Jones is the new Lions captain for the 2021 tour of South Africa, and it is not hard to see why.

Warren Gatland has gone for the man he knows so well, rugby's most capped players and a leader like no other.

Jones was actually wearing the Lions armband for the final decisive Test in Australia eight years ago, with an injured Sam Warburton watching on from the sidelines.

Before the players went out for their warm-up, the Welsh lock produced a speech that will go down in Lions folklore.

Jones has come under attack from one South African media commentator this week, who questioned whether he should even be in the squad.

But that 2013 moment left fans in awe, showing the respect he commands.

"I make no apologies for repeating what's already been said," remarked the Wales man, his steely gaze seeking out every member of the huddle inside the Lions dressing room.

"We will be physical, we will be aggressive, we will be disciplined, yea?

"Every facet of the game.

"And the final thing, Faz (Andy Farrell) said there is no tomorrow after the game - there is, there's a tomorrow.

"There's one with this jersey and it will remain on you until you finish playing, until you die, from today.

"And there's a tomorrow without the jersey, we've got 80 minutes to choose which one we want."

The Lions went on to romp to a 41-16 victory in Sydney, clinching the Test series for the first time since the South Africa tour in 1997.
