Aluminum foil hacks: It is not just to wrap your leftovers; here's 15 surprising ways to use it around your home

Aluminum foil is probably sitting in your kitchen right now, but its uses go far beyond wrapping leftovers and covering baking trays. This inexpensive household staple can help clean stubborn stains, sharpen scissors, speed up ironing, protect plants and even keep bananas fresh for longer.

From the kitchen to the laundry room, here are some surprisingly useful aluminum foil hacks that can make everyday household chores easier.

1. Scrub burnt pots and remove rust

A ball of crushed aluminum foil can work as a simple scrubber for stubborn stains, burnt marks and rust on metal cookware. Wet the surface, sprinkle some salt or baking soda over it and gently scrub with the foil ball. Wash the pot with detergent afterward.

Avoid using this method on non-stick cookware , as the foil can scratch and damage the coating.

2. Make custom baking shapes

Need a baking pan in an unusual shape? Aluminum foil can be folded and moulded into custom shapes for cakes, pies and pizzas. Its flexibility allows you to create a shape that fits your recipe while also helping prevent food from sticking to the tray.

3. Turn foil into a homemade funnel

Forgot where you kept your funnel? Roll a sheet of aluminum foil into a cone and use it to transfer liquids into narrow bottles or containers. The foil can be shaped to fit the opening.

4. Give vegetables a quick peel

A tightly crumpled ball of aluminum foil can act as a rough surface for scraping the skin from certain vegetables. It can be useful for potatoes, ginger and burdock when you want to remove a thin outer layer without wasting too much of the vegetable.

5. Sharpen blunt scissors

If your scissors have become dull, fold aluminum foil into several layers and cut through it repeatedly. The process can help improve the cutting edge of lightly dull scissors.

The same trick is sometimes used with kitchen knives, although proper knife sharpening tools are a better option for maintaining a blade.

6. Polish some chrome surfaces

Aluminum foil can also be used to clean certain chrome or chromium-alloy surfaces. Make a small foil ball, wet it and gently rub the affected area. The combination of friction and the reaction between wet aluminum and the surface can help remove some rust and restore shine.

7. Make ironing faster

Place a sheet of aluminum foil underneath the cover of an ironing board. The foil reflects heat back toward the fabric, potentially helping wrinkles disappear faster. Make sure the foil remains underneath the board cover rather than directly against the iron.

8. Reduce static in the dryer

Another popular household trick is to put one or two aluminum foil balls inside a tumble dryer with clothes. The balls can help reduce static buildup and may make fabrics feel less stiff.

9. Use it as a disposable painting palette

Artists and DIY enthusiasts can use aluminum foil as a temporary palette for mixing paint. Once the painting is finished, the foil can simply be discarded instead of requiring a lengthy cleanup.

10. Protect young trees from animals

Wrapping aluminum foil around the base or vulnerable parts of young trees can create a physical barrier against some animals that may chew on the bark or buds. It can be particularly useful when protecting newly planted trees.

11. Create temporary curls

Aluminum foil can also be used as a makeshift tool for creating curls. Small sections of damp hair can be wrapped around pieces of foil and left overnight. The technique can produce temporary waves or curls without using a traditional curling iron.

12. Reflect heat from a radiator

A sheet or panel of aluminum foil placed on the wall behind a radiator can reflect some radiant heat back into the room instead of allowing the wall to absorb it. This can be useful for improving heating efficiency, particularly around radiators positioned against external walls.

13. Keep banana stems covered

Bananas naturally release ethylene, a gas that contributes to ripening. Wrapping the stems with a small piece of aluminum foil is a popular kitchen trick that may slow the ripening process and help bananas stay usable for longer.

14. Keep pets off furniture

If your pet keeps jumping onto a particular sofa or table, placing aluminum foil over the surface temporarily may help. Many cats and some other pets dislike the unfamiliar texture and crinkling sound.

Consistent use for a period of time can help make the furniture less appealing as a climbing spot.

15. Get more out of a simple kitchen staple

Aluminum foil may look like an ordinary kitchen item, but its flexibility, reflective surface and abrasive qualities make it useful for far more than food storage. From cleaning cookware and polishing surfaces to helping with laundry, gardening and DIY projects, a roll of foil can become an unexpectedly handy household tool.

However, it is important to use it carefully. Aluminum foil should not be used on surfaces that can easily scratch, such as non-stick cookware, and some hacks may not be suitable for every material or appliance.
