Alton Towers gives sneak peek at new Gangsta Granny ride opening this year

Alton Towers Resort has offered up a sneak peek inside its brand new ride inspired by David Walliams' novel Gangsta Granny.

The aptly named Gangsta Granny: The Ride will take visitors on an adventure with character Ben, who discovers his Granny is secretly an international jewel thief - and this time, she's got her eyes on the Crown Jewels!

Now the resort has shared a behind-the-scenes video taking theme park fans inside the ride as it's being built, with sneak peeks at the set, vehicles and designs for a taste of what's to come.

It looks like it will be a very immersive experience, with riders sitting in 'Royal Carriages' that will transport them through the iconic scenes of the book, where they will see, feel, hear and even smell their surroundings.

David Walliams himself has been very involved in the project - and it's revealed he will even provide some of the voiceovers for the attraction.

Meanwhile there will also be heaps of special effects to bring the drama to life, whether that's being chased down the streets of London or coming face to face with the Queen.

In the video John Burton, Merlin Creative Lead, offers a tour inside the attraction, including offering some insight on how the special effects and animation will work.

The ride was originally due to open in 2020, so the clips in the video were filmed pre-pandemic when it was originally being built.

Still, now that Alton Towers has announced reopening dates for its theme park, water park and hotels in line with England's lockdown roadmap, theme park fans can once again start getting excited about seeing the ride for themselves.

Of course, it's not just the ride which will be new. The resort is actually building an entire themed land, The World of David Walliams, which will feature a number of other rides and attractions including a Royal Carousel, Raj’s Bouncy Bottom Burp and Raj's Shop.

Meanwhile, the Alton Towers Resort's hotel will also be opening some Gangsta Granny themed rooms, complete with huge artwork on the walls depicting Ben and his Granny, as well as a colourful London skyline.

First published by HarperCollins in 2011, Gangsta Granny was David's first number one bestseller in children's books, with overall sales boasting 1.75million in the UK alone. Since then, there's also been a theatre adaptation, as well as a BBC television adaptation starring Miranda Hart, Rob Brydon, David Walliams as Ben’s Dad and Joanna Lumley as The Queen.
