Alton Towers delays opening of theme park and closes hotels until further notice

Alton Towers’ opening weekend has been postponed until further notice and all its hotels closed with immediate effect.

The popular family attraction was due to welcome visitors through its gates for the first time this year on Saturday, March 21, but following Government guidance about the coronavirus pandemic owners have decided to put this on hold.

The launch was also due to include the opening of the park’s brand new land, The World of David Walliams, with new experience Gangsta Granny: The Ride , in which guests could go on a Crown Jewels heist with characters from the book.

All visits booked up until April 25 will be refunded or rescheduled, if the park is still closed after this date further measures will be taken and customers contacted.

A statement on the Alton Towers website reads: “Further to recent updates from the Government on the response to the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak, we have taken the very difficult decision to postpone the opening of Alton Towers Resort Theme Park [and to close our Hotels and support offices] as a precautionary measure.

“While we have been looking forward to welcoming visitors this weekend, we believe that this decision is the right thing to protect the health and wellbeing of our employees and guests.”

The theme park in Staffordshire joins the likes of Rock City, Nottingham Contemporary and Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall in closing its doors amid coronavirus concerns.
