Alternatives to capitalism – books podcast

As the age of austerity rolls on, we go in search of alternatives to 21st-century turbo-capitalism.

Our first stop is in Marinaleda, a small town in southern Spain which formed a collective in 1991. Dan Hancox comes to the studio to explain how this Andalusian pueblo has created a community which has provided prosperity for all, inspired a political movement and weathered the financial storms that have swept the world since 2007.

He's joined by the Guardian's environment editor, John Vidal, who tells us about similar movements springing up all around the world, from Bolivia to India and from Chile to the US.

We also hear from the German novelist Eugen Ruge, who talks about his novel in pieces, In Times of Fading Light. He tells us about his own experiences in communist Germany, how it feels to find yourself on the wrong side of history, and why the novel has helped him to recover his East German identity.
