Alternative high school in Orlando to celebrate first prom

ORLANDO _ Goodwill's program, Project COMPASS, an alternative high-school program for at-risk youth, will hold its first prom on April 6.

Behind rows of donated items for sale inside the warehouse-sized Goodwill store on Orange Blossom Trail is where 34 students work to earn their high-school diplomas.

The program is aimed to help students who are at risk of dropping out of traditional high schools to graduate.

Small class sizes and one-on-one instruction are among the draws for most of the students who attend.

But with an untraditional education, students may lose cherished traditions like the prom.

For the first time, Project Compass is hosting a prom for its students in an event space inside the Goodwill facility.

To help pay for the "State of Grace" themed dance, Goodwill is selling more than 1,000 dresses and accessories for $25 or less.

Proceeds also will go to support Goodwill's job training and placement programs in Central Florida.

Goodwill is offering students discounted prom services such as styling hair, nails and makeup.

The event will happen at Goodwill Industries of Central Florida at 7531 S. Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando.
