'Already a little bit scared' - Liverpool defender speaks out as unique loan opportunity looms

On-loan defender Sepp van den Berg has admitted facing Liverpool will be tough after they thrashed Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Reds were 4-0 up at half-time and Mohamed Salah became the first opposition player to score a hat-trick at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Liverpool return to action midweek in the Carabao Cup with a short trip to face Preston North End.

Van den Berg is currently on loan at Deepdale and he'll be hopeful he can feature against his parent club - but he knows Liverpool will be a daunting prospect.

“I know we were already a little bit scared but them beating United 5-0 is impressive," he told Sky Sports.

“Of course, I already knew they were capable of doing it so it’s nothing new really but we know they are good so we have to be very good as well.

“First half, everything [was impressive]. Quick play, [Mohamed] Salah being in top form as well.

“I know they are very good in every position so it’s going to be a very hard game."

The 19-year-old re-joined Preston in the summer after he spent the second-half of last season there on loan.

The decision on whether he'll be eligible for the match sits with manager Jurgen Klopp, but Van den Berg is hopeful he'll be able to play.

He said after the draw was made: “I had mixed feelings. To be fair I was just happy to play a big team in the next round but then again I know it’s Liverpool so it’s still my club.

"I already knew beforehand if it was Liverpool I might have trouble playing wise, but just seeing everyone’s reaction in the club and the fans, you can see it’s a very big game for everyone here so it’s a great opponent to play."
