Alphonse Areola turned down Champions League offer to join Fulham

Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has admitted he was in discussions with other clubs but chose Fulham so he could 'bounce back better' after becoming second choice at PSG.

The stopper won two league titles in the French capital before heading on loan to Real Madrid when Keylor Navas arrived at Le Parc des Princes.

It was unclear how quickly Areola may unseat Marek Rodak at Craven Cottage when he missed out on the squad for the opening match of the season against Arsenal but he has been everpresent in the league since.

The 27-year-old made it clear he wanted an opportunity where he was trusted as first choice.

When asked about turning down Rennes, he told Canal+ (via le10sport): "There were discussions, but it was not clear. At one point, you had to be in your "humble" head, start from behind to be able to bounce back better.

"Of course, leaving Paris and Madrid, I certainly had opportunities, of the same calibre yes, but I needed this to be clear. Tell me: "you play, it's you in the goal and now, we count on you". That's all.

"Come back to number 2 behind Keylor Navas at PSG? For me no, it was not at all possible, I lived it in Madrid. I knew I was coming in as number two. But it was Real Madrid."
