Alphonse Areola makes case to replace Lukasz Fabianski in West Ham net after Man Utd performance

Alphonse Areola was thrilled to finally make his West Ham debut after his summer transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

The goalkeeper has so far played second fiddle to current No.1 Lukasz Fabianski but a superb showing from the Frenchman reminded David Moyes he has not moved to east London to sit on the bench.

Areola was keen to stress his pleasure was in helping West Ham progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup rather than making his own case to replace Fabianski.

"I was happy to start and to help the team win that game but I think all of the team did a great job and that we kept our goal with a clean sheet," Areola said.

Asked if his display shows he is ready to fight to be the Hammers No.1 Areola again spoke about the team rather than his own individual ambitions: "I will enjoy tonight with the team," he added.

"That is the most important thing. I am happy with my performance, tonight we have to enjoy that win against a big, big team. We have to keep that and try to keep that game as a reference and show that we are a team who are playing for something."

The goalkeeper believes the performance at Old Trafford is testament to the Hammers strength in depth and proves they can go on to win silverware this season.

"I think we have a good group with quality and we are all focused on one thing, to win," Areola said.

"For me I think we can go far in every competition. The gaffer changed the team and we responded really well, everyone can play in that team and perform and help the team."

For West Ham the victory over Manchester United tasted even sweeter after the heartbreak of defeat on Sunday against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men.

"After the game [on Sunday] we were a bit disappointed and we tried to keep our heads up and work for last night," the goalkeeper said. "That is what we did and we are happy to win and I think we deserved that win so we keep going."

Next up for West Ham in the Carabao Cup is a visit from Manchester City, a team that have not lost in the competition for five years since a fourth-round defeat to Manchester United in October 2016. The challenge of facing Pep Guardiola's team is not lost on Areola but he and the Hammers are up for it.

"Another big game," he said. "If you want to win something you have to beat every team. We are competitors and we want to win and against big teams."
