Along with original Omicron strain, 3 sub-types circulating

JAIPUR: The latest genome sequencing report of Covid patients showed that 99% of the samples tested positive for Omicron variant, while 1.2% tested positive for the Delta variant in the state.

Out of 486 samples sent for genome sequencing, 480 were Omicron variant, while six tested positive for Delta strain.

The state is now reporting original Omicron variant BA.1 cases, along with sub-types of Omicron variant BA.1 including BA.2, BA.1.1 and B.1.1.529. BA.2 has taken over the third wave as 74% of the Omicron samples sent for genome sequencing tested positive for BA.2.

Doctors are anticipating that the increase in Covid deaths could be related to BA.2. “Since most of the samples in genome sequencing have tested positive for Omicron sub-type BA.2, recent Covid deaths could be linked to BA.2. But, we will be able to say it clearly only if genome sequencing of the dead are done,” said Dr Ajit Singh, superintendent, RUHS Hospital. SMS Medical College is analysing the sub-types of variants to find out if they cause different symptoms and severity..
