Alnwick Garden announces reopening but with half usual capacity

Family favourite The Alnwick Garden is the latest local visitor attraction to announce its reopening date - and it's set to be half as busy as usual.

The 12-acre gardens and its adventure golf area in Northumberland will be open again from July 1 but only for limited numbers of visitors: just 50% of what it expects to welcome at 'normal' times.

It is also relying upon people to take responsibility for their own social distancing within its grounds.

Families will be able to wander at their leisure at the award-winning venue - the vision of The Duchess of Northumberland - but must maintain their own two-metre rule, although the venue will be keeping a close eye on the expected changes to Government guidance.

Where one-way systems are necessary there will be signs to follow, such as to the adventure golf kiosk where time slots can be booked.

The Duchess has said of her creation: "It has become a contemporary pleasure garden, which brings joy to millions."

She said seeing it in darkness is like watching it sleep, "resting in preparation" for visitors, adding: "To me, a garden without people is dead and people have brought The Alnwick Garden to life and restored its soul."

Its fans will be delighted at news of its reopening, although there will be some restrictions in place.

While the children's tractors will be out of bounds for now, favourites such as the Poison Garden will be open, although without its guided tours. Other highlights include the Grand Cascade with its 120 water jets; its roses and its Ornamental Garden.

There will be free hand sanitiser on offer and other changes visitors will notice include extra outdoor seating. Toilet facilities will be more limited but those on offer will be cleaned every 20 minutes.

The Treehouse restaurant will be closed and for now there will be only limited takeaway food available but the main lawn will be open for socially-distanced picnics.

Due to its coronavirus lockdown the venue will be extending its friends' memberships, as well as the likes of gift cards, by the length of time of time it has had to close.
