Alnwick Castle to screen Bohemian Rhapsody and The Greatest Showman sing-along

As locations go, The Alnwick Castle in Northumberland is certainly a dramatic one and it's no surprise that it has been picked by film scouts to feature on the big screen.

The visitor attraction has been used several times as a backdrop for movies including the Harry Potter franchise and Hollywood blockbuster Transformers: The Last Knight  - as well as a setting for TV drama - but now it will be playing a different kind of role: as a cinema itself.

Having re-opened this Friday for its new spring season , the castle is adding to its visitor programme with upcoming film screenings.

In August it will be hosting Cinema Under the Stars screenings of new Queen-inspired award-winner Bohemian Rhapsody and a sing-along version of The Greatest Showman.

The screenings, which invite audiences to bring blankets and camping chairs and enjoy snacks under the stars, are set to be hugely popular and they add to an evening programme of outdoor events which include performances in its grounds in July of Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth and, at Hulne Abbey, Much Ado About Nothing.

Other attractions on its programme include jousting spectacles and its always-popular Harry Potter Wizarding events which feature broomstick training; magical activities and look-alike characters.

A one-off addition will be a Peace Celebration to mark the centenary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles which officially brought the Second World War to an end.

The castle is also due to announce new food outlets, including creation of a new bar and an Armoury Take-Away and revamping its fish and chip shop and touring food cart.

The two August film screenings will take place in a cinema set up within the castle grounds in the Outer Bailey.

Bohemian Rhapsody will be shown first, on August 24, and tickets can be bought here .

The Greatest Showman sing-along will take place the next night, August 25: to book tickets see here .

Tickets cost £14.50 (plus booking fee) and some family tickets are available. VIP options are already sold out.

Gates on both days will open at 6.30pm; there will be food, snacks, a bar and music before the film and the screenings will begin after sunset.
