Alnwick Castle staff subjected to 'high volume' of abuse since reopening

Officials at Alnwick Castle have slammed the "high volume" of abusive behaviour towards staff after the site reopened following the coronavirus lockdown.

Managers at the popular Northumberland attraction have said there have been a rising number of incidents of verbal abuse towards stewards and said anyone engaging in this type of behaviour may be asked to leave the grounds.

It comes after the attraction reopened its State Rooms and resumed popular activities including Harry Potter broomstick training earlier in the summer.

A spokesperson for Alnwick Castle said on Twitter: "We are sad to report that we are currently experiencing a high volume of verbally abusive behaviour towards our stewarding staff. We appreciate that your visit to Alnwick Castle will feel different this year - there are new procedures in place and some areas cannot be accessed.

"We understand visitors may be frustrated, but we cannot excuse abusive behaviour towards staff or other visitors. We hope all our visitors understand our current opening measures are in place for their safety, and that of our staff, during the challenging times we still live in.

"Abuse is not acceptable. If any visitors engage in this type of behaviour, our Security team may ask you to leave the grounds."

Northumberland Estates, which manages the attraction, had to introduce a number of measures to keep the site Covid-secure.

Visitors can now tour the State Rooms in groups of up to eight, with each tour lasting half an hour and including a visit to the refurbished Ante Library.

They must book entry in advance online on the Alnwick Castle website, but activities are booked on site on arrival, including State Rooms tours.

Entry to the Grounds costs £6 per person with children aged 16 and under free of charge and with a proportion of the entry fee going to local charities. The State Room tours will cost an additional £12 per person and masks must be worn.

Once on site, vsitors can stay as long as they wish, within the opening hours.
