Alnwick Brewery giving away beer that would go to waste as pubs remain closed

With pubs doors closed, this lovingly-brewed local beer might have had to be poured down the drain.

Instead, it's helping to raise money for the NHS - and make self-isolation more bearable for Alnwick residents.

The Alnwick Brewery has begun giving away its surplus beer stock, filling up milk bottles, glass jars and coke bottles with its most popular brews.

One local even joked about bringing along a bathtub to fill up, said co-owner Ian Robinson.

"The moment the pubs and restaurants were closed, we couldn't sell any of the beer that was in the casks," Ian told ChronicleLive.

"Fortunately we also produce huge amounts of bottled beer, which has a much longer shelf-life and which people can drink at home.

"But once beer is in the cask you've got maybe two months before it goes off, so we had to move it quickly."

Head brewer Phil Bell suggested inviting people to come and have their own containers filled up, in exchange for donations for the NHS, and the idea quickly became a hit.

On Friday, locals queued outside the brewery's shop, A Taste of Northumbria, in Alnwick Market place, observing a strict one-in-one-out system as Phil filled up containers "of all shapes and sizes" with the popular Alnwick IPA, the recently-launched Hotspur, and more.

Ian added: "It's a way of saying thank you to our regulars as well as raising money for the NHS - the people who would normally be drinking this in the pub, but won't be able to do that for the foreseeable future, for them this is their last opportunity for a while to have a proper draught beer.

"I think it will probably move quickly over the next few weeks. I would far rather it went to people who will enjoy it. We've seen some nice things as well, like people who've got employees on furlough coming in and getting beer to distribute for them.

"It's just making the best of a bad situation."

Ian and his team have now raised over £500 for NHS charities, as well as giving away perishable luxury goods including cakes, biscuits, fudge and chocolate to local dementia wards and care homes.

"It's nice to have raised something," he said.

"This isn't about us, it's about supporting the community in any shape or form we can - and the beer certainly seems to have attracted some attention."

Beer giveaways will be happening on Fridays until the stock has run out, or it goes out of date.
