Almost half a million Covid tests carried out in NI in 28 weeks since lockdown

Today marks 28 weeks since lockdown was announced in the UK and to date 10,729 people in Nothern Ireland have tested positive for Covid-19.

A total of 479, 151 tests have been carried out on 338, 556 people.

Having dipped in recent weeks, infections are on the rise with 46 people currently being treated in hospital, five of them in intensive care.

Almost half a million people have been tested for the virus so far and according to the Department of Health, the number of people who have died with 578.

On Sunday new cases of Coronavirus in Northern Ireland had risen by 187 in 24 hours but up to 2pm there had been no further reported fatalities.

In the last week, 1,418 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in NI and the age category with the largest number of positive cases in the past seven days remained the 20 to39, with 621 cases.

A total or 273 people aged up to 19 returned positive tests in the last week. Those aged 40 to 59, saw 340 infection confirmations, and in the60 to 79 age group, 134 people tested positive.

There are still 27 active Covid-19 care home outbreaks and a further 50 people in the age group of people aged 80, last week tested positive for the virus.

The Covid-19 deaths by age group show that those aged 80 and over, have suffered 377 fatalities, in the the 60 to 79 age group 175 people have died, and 23 people have died in the 40 to 59 age groups.

A further two people aged 20 to 39 have also passed away as a result of the infection.

The highest number of deaths per district have occurred in Belfast with 165, and the least, 11, have happened Fermanagh and Omagh district.

A total of 354 people have passed away in hospital, 188 in residential or care homes and 21 in the community. A further 15 have not had the setting of their passing recorded.

The number of people with a positive laboratory completed test from September 20 to September 26 were :

A total 35,197 people were tested during that time.

The Government has announced a trial for a potential vaccine for Covid-19 will start before the end of next week.
