'Almost blizzard conditions': Winter arrives in Brindabella

Winter has arrived in parts of the Brindabella Range, with a blanket of snow deposited overnight.

Belconnen man Michael Javsnik went for a drive up the Brindabella Ranges about 7am today.

Mr Javsnik, who made the trek alone with his coffee gear in his 4WD, said he estimated the snowfall to be about 2cm on Mt Franklin Road at 1500m above sea level.

"It was cold, almost blizzard conditions," he said.

"Winds were about 50-60km/h."

Mr Javsnik said he saw the forecast yesterday and decided to head out in appropriate gear.

He said other people keen on checking out the winter wonderland needed to prepare.

"It's not always suitable for 2WDs," he said.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecasted snow falling above 900m for the rest of Saturday, with winds westerly turning southwesterly until late afternoon.

Temperatures are between 3 degrees and 9 degrees and will fall to minus three tomorrow.

Overnight, fresh snow had also blanketed Thredbo with Mother Nature delivering 10cm up high and falling all the way down to the village.

Caroline Brauer, Thredbo marketing manager, said the alpine was sporting a new white blanket.

"With 28 days to go until our opening, it's a good time to be receiving snowfall," she said.

"We're really pleased to see white across the region.

"We've had consistent early season snowfalls, which is a really good sign for winter ahead. The ground is obviously frozen with a nice layer of snow."

As for advice for those keen to checking it out, Ms Brauer said "definitely rug up".

"We recommend wearing layers and making sure you have appropriate snow gear, as well as planning early and booking in advance to avoid disappointment," she said.
