Almost 500 Covid patients admitted to Nottinghamshire hospitals in a week

Almost 500 patients were admitted to Nottinghamshire's hospital in one week.

NHS England data shows that between January 11 and January 17, there was a total of 495 daily Covid hospital admissions and diagnoses recorded at Nottinghamshire's two hospital trusts.

A total of 320 people were admitted to Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital (NUH) while 175 patients were admitted to Sherwood Forest Hospitals.

On January 16, a total of 68 patients were admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals.

At Sherwood Forest Hospitals, which runs which runs the King's Mill Hospital, Mansfield Community Hospital and Newark Hospital, the worst day saw 40 patients admitted on January 11.

It comes as Nottinghamshire Live was granted access to Queen's Medical Centre ICU, revealing the true scale of this wave of the pandemic.

Medical Director at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust, Dr Keith Girling, told Nottinghamshire Live that the pressure on staff is "absolutely immense".

He said: "In terms of so far this year, we’ve seen virtually no flu or norovirus. What we have seen is an overwhelming amount of coronavirus in its place to numbers of patients now that are nearly double those that we saw in the peak in April.

"Of course, it’s having a massive impact on our staff and the pressure on them across the hospital.

"The critical care demand, the respiratory demand, the demand on our healthcare and the elderly services is absolutely immense."
