Almost 30 workers lose jobs at £35m Hull biomass plant as firm collapses

Almost 30 people lost their jobs when the operator of a £35m biomass plant near Hull announced it was set to enter liquidation.

HRS Energy Tansterne was the company behind the renewable energy plant near Aldbrough in Holderness.

The plant was expected when operational to convert 150,000 tonnes of waste wood every year into clean energy.

However, earlier this month, HRS Energy Tansterne handed control of the plant to one of its clients, GB-Bio Ltd.

It has now , and has made all 27 people who worked for HRS at the Tansterne biomass site redundant.

A statement released by RSM said: “HRS Energy Tansterne Limited provided operating and maintenance services in respect of the Tansterne Advanced Biomass Plant.

“On September 4, the Company handed control of the site to its client, GB-Bio Ltd.

“On September 10, all 27 of the members of staff employed by the Company were made redundant.

The Company has instructed insolvency practitioners from RSM Restructuring Advisory LLP to assist in respect of convening a member’s meeting and creditors’ decision procedure for the purpose of placing the Company into liquidation, which are due to take place on Friday, September 27.”

The 22MW biomass plant, located east of Hull, covers a 12-acre site.

Work on the plant started back in March 2017. Once operational, it was expected to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The latest announcement from HRS, and subsequent redundancies, has however cast doubt over the future of the plant.

A supplier who has worked on the biomass plant during its construction spoke to Hull Live about the news.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: “I think there has been some doubt surrounding the plant which has been rumbling on for quite some time.

“I did some work at the plant, and sent an invoice to HRS Energy Tansterne during this summer, and received no reply.

“I chased that up around August time, and still heard nothing. Now I have received a letter which says the company is about to go into liquidation.

“I am not holding out much hope of getting the money I am owed to be honest. Luckily I have got lots of other work on the go, so it is not the end of the world for me.”
