Supermarket giant Tesco are said to be cutting almost two thousand jobs across the UK after a re-haul its overnight stocking system.
Around 1600 jobs are said to be at risk across 36 large stores and 49 convenience stores after they decided to move it's overnight re-stocking jobs to during the day time in a bid to ensure more staff are available to help customers during peak times.
In addition to the scaling back of their stocking system, the brand are also said to be converting 36 of its petrol stations to become pay-at-pump only sites during overnight hours.
According to a report by Sky News, it's discount store brand, Jack's, was also closing its stores meaning around 130 jobs would be lost as a result.
As a result of both changes, the figure of job losses is expected to reach around the 1600 mark however alternative roles can be filled and offered to those affected with 3000 vacancies currently needing to be filled.
A spokesperson for the supermarket said workers on the night shift were only informed of the changes to overnight roles on Monday evening, which was why the announcements were not made at the same time.
Jason Tarry, Tesco's UK and Ireland boss, said: "We operate in a highly competitive and fast-paced market and our customers are shopping differently, especially since the start of the pandemic.
"We are always looking at how we can run our business as simply and efficiently as possible, so that we can re-invest in the things that matter most to customers.
"The changes we are announcing today will help us do this.
"Our priority now is to support our impacted colleagues through these changes and, wherever possible, find them alternative roles within our business."
