Almost 200 NHS Ayrshire and Arran staff test positive for coronavirus

Nearly 200 Ayrshire NHS staff have tested positive for coronavirus.

The number of healthcare workers unable to work during the second wave of the pandemic has increased since last week.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran have confirmed that 191 have become infected with COVID-19 whilst test and protect identified close contacts and asked 38 to self-isolate.

Last week the total number of staff who were self-isolating at home was 144.

That number has now risen to 229.

It comes as admissions of Covid patients to Ayrshire hospitals soared over the weekend to hit record high numbers.

It was confirmed yesterday that 217 patients were battling coronavirus in hospital — an increase of 12 from the previous day.

Dr Crawford McGuffie, medical director at NHS Ayrshire and Arran, said: "NHS Ayrshire and Arran has prepared extensively to deal with COVID-19 and continues to work to ensure we have the right resources, equipment and staffing in place.

"As of Friday, January 15, we currently have 191 staff self-isolating at home as a result of testing positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) and 38 staff self-isolating at home having been contacted by Test and Protect."
