Almost 100 staff at Cardiff energy company at risk of redundancy

Almost 100 people at an energy company in Cardiff are at risk of redundancy due to fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

Opus Energy, which only opened an office in Cardiff in 2016, is set to scale down the business including considering closing the city centre office based in the Capital Quarter.

As a result, 93 employees based in the Cardiff office are at risk of redundancy and the office faces closure - less than five years after opening.

Opus is one of several companies that is part of the Drax group - a UK-based renewable energy company focused on renewable power generation.

A spokesperson from Drax said that these changes were a result of a potential £60m impact from the coronavirus pandemic.

They said that all employees at risk will now enter into a 45 day consultation period and no decisions will be made until after this time.

Drax says that the impact the coronavirus crisis has had on the small and medium market (SME) has meant they have had to make changes in how the business operates.

Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Monica Walsh, Ken Poole, Head of Economic Development at Cardiff County Council, and John, Alexander and Gareth Smart, representing Capital Quarter development firm JR Smart, celebrated the official opening of the site on October 10 2016.

It is not yet known exactly how many jobs will be lost at the site and whether any of those employees at risk will be offered positions in other branches.

The Drax group employs 3,400 people in the UK and North America.

A Drax spokesperson said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has created significant issues for some of the businesses we supply energy to - particularly in the SME market.

"Following a strategic review, we have made a decision to make some changes to help drive down costs in the SME part of our business, this includes the proposal to no longer have an office located in Cardiff and we are consulting with 93 employees contractually based there whose roles are at risk of redundancy.”
