Almost €10,000 raised to help pay for funeral of tragic tot Santina Cawley

An appeal to help pay for the funeral of tragic toddler Santina Cawley has raised more than €9,700.

The two-year-old was found in a critical condition in the early hours of last Friday.

Her dad Mike raised the alarm after she was found at an apartment in the Elderwood complex on Boreenmanna Road on the south side of Cork city.

An initial examination showed Santina had suffered bone fractures, cuts and head injuries.

A large amount of blood was also present at the scene.

A woman in her 30s, who is not the child’s mother, was arrested in connection with the investigation on Monday but was released yesterday.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, a radio station in Cork has helped start a fundraiser to assist the family with funeral costs.

The GoFundMe was set up by the Neil Prendeville show on Cork’s RedFM after a friend of the family appealed to them.

The fundraiser hit its target of €8,000 in less than a day with donations still pouring in last night.

Speaking on the show yesterday family friend Mary said: “The woman [Santina’s mam] is in shock and so are her other children.

“It’s a dreadfully hard thing to explain to them. Bridgee was in the hospital when Santina died, she was in her arms when she died.

“She’s been left with four small children and she doesn’t have the money so I thought I could get some help for her.

“Santina was a beautiful little girl, she was a nice little happy child. Her mother and her grandmother are lovely people and she was just like them.

“The support for them is overwhelming.

“They were picking out a little coffin for her, it was heartbreaking.

“The family are just barely scraping by and her family need some donations for this funeral.

“I can make sure the money from the GoFundMe goes straight to Bridgee and her family for her child.”
