Victoria Hamilton is set to reprise her role in Mike Bartlett’s Albion in the Almeida Theatre’s spring season.
This is the first production the Almeida has revived and artistic director Rupert Goold, who directs, said Hamilton’s performance in 2017 was “one of the finest in my tenure”.
The theatre has also announced the UK premiere of Daddy by American playwright Jeremy O. Harris, whose critically acclaimed Slave Play is currently running on Broadway. Daddy first opened in March, starring Alan Cumming. The play, which Harris says is "in the tradition of nineteenth century melodrama", explores the inter-generational relationship between a rich white art collector and a young black artist. Danya Taymor will direct the transfer.
Another new play, by Wonderland writer Beth Steel, completes the new season announcement. Blanche McIntyre directs the world premiere of The House of Shades about the ever-changing landscape of working-class Britain. Steel won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for most promising playwright for Wonderland in 2014.
The Almeida has also announced a new annual programme to support emerging and mid-career writers in developing new plays for larger stages. The first group of seven writers is Kendall Feaver, Sami Ibrahim, Charley Miles, Amy Ng, Iman Qureshi, Sam Steiner and Ross Willis.
There will also be a new resident designers programme for set, costume, sound and lighting design, similar to their resident directors scheme.
