The Newcastle Jets A-League Men's team has been forced into isolation after midfielder Angus Thurgate tested positive for COVID-19.

The Jets have not named the player but AAP understands Thurgate, who was double vaccinated, became symptomatic on Monday.

He underwent a rapid antigen test as well as a PCR test on Tuesday which returned a positive finding.

Under A-League protocols players undergo rapid antigen tests daily and are subject to a PCR test every 72 hours.

The rest of the Jets' men's side and club staff have undergone tests, entered isolation, and won't be able to return to training until they receive negative results.

The club's A-League Women's team has also been sent for testing.

"At this stage, no other person has reported symptoms, or returned a positive test," the Jets said in a statement.

"The Jets will continue to work with the A-Leagues and NSW Health and an update regarding the upcoming weekend's game against Macarthur FC will be provided in the next 24 hours."

The COVID-19 case at Newcastle follows Sydney FC defender Rhyan Grant being diagnosed with the virus last week.

Grant was unavailable for the 2-0 defeat at the Central Coast Mariners on the weekend and will have to isolate until next Wednesday.

The Sky Blues said Grant has experienced few symptoms but has lost his sense of taste.

On Monday Newcastle's NRL team, the Knights, were sent home from training and ordered for tests amid fears players had been close contacts to a growing cluster in the region.
