'Ally who?' Former Rangers star Ronald de Boer shares hilarious wind-up he had with Ally McCoist

Ronald de Boer has shared a hilarious exchange that’s classic Ally McCoist.

The Dutch star arrived at Rangers from Barcelona in 2000 amid much fanfare and for a transfer fee of around £4million.

He loved life at Ibrox in the beginning but soon the smile was to be wiped off de Boer’s face.

As his form dipped, the Holland winger grew tired of people constantly banging on about legendary striker McCoist.

He decided to wind up the Scotland forward who was at that point playing for Kilmarnock.

De Boer spoke to the Daily Record and in a brilliant bit of trolling, dismissed him as a no-mark.

But it wasn’t long before McCoist was to get his own back.

Speaking on talkSPORT, de Boer picks up the story as he leaves host Alan Brazil and fellow guest Sam Allardyce in stitches.

The now 48-year-old said: "When I came to Rangers there was a bit of criticism of me. They talked so many times about 'Ally McCoist ... Ally McCoist'.

"And I got a bit sick and tired of it. So one time in a newspaper I said, 'Honestly, if you go to Holland and asked someone on the street if they know Ally McCoist' they’d say, 'Ally who?' and they would say, 'Is that an actor?'

"Nobody knew Ally. So of course on the front page of the Daily Record it was 'Ally who?'

"But the funny thing was Ally went to the manager of the time Dick Advocaat at the training ground and said, 'Dick, this Ronald de Boer, is he on the pitch? You’ll have to point him out because I don’t know what he looks like'.

"I loved that."

De Boer won the Treble in season 2002-03 with Rangers before ending his four-year stay by moving to Al-Rayyan in Qatar.

He added: "I enjoyed my time there. It was amazing."
