Ally McCoist silenced on-air as Rangers hero winds up English colleagues over Six Nations triumph

Pundit Ally McCoist was silenced on-air midway through an impassioned appraisal of Scotland's Six Nations heroes after beating England in their own backyard.

Duhan van der Merwe landed the only try of the game on Saturday while Finn Russell's two penalties cancelled out a pair from Owen Farrell for the home side for a historic 11-6 Scotland win.

It was their first triumph at Twickenham since 1983 and McCoist was in jovial spirits on Monday morning as he took to his usual Sports Breakfast slot on talkSPORT.

Joined on the English station by presenter Laura Woods and Watford hero Troy Deeney, the former Rangers striker was in hostile territory.

He said: "Woodsy, I am telling you it's one of the best performances I've seen from a Scotland team anywhere, never mind at Twickenham.

"As you know, our record at Twickenham isn't good. We hadn't won there for 38 years. But I watched the game and we totally dominated England from start to finish.

"I've got to say, they were brilliant, magnanimous in defeat, but they had to be because Scotland were that good.

"To confine England to two Owen Farrell penalties at home, six points, it's remarkable. And we got the try obviously from van der Merwe.

"I am going to get carried away, we've got some world-class players in the Scotland team now. Stuart Hogg, Finn Russell, boys like that. Cameron Redpath made a debut, what a debut that was! It was unbelievable.

"And I'm so pleased for the lads and indeed Gregor Townsend..."

At that point the station's producers had enough, and McCoist faded to silence in favour of a news bulletin.

That prompted Woods to remark: "Not interested, Ally McCoist..."
